Dozza, the painted village, and Imola’s hills

The murales painted by famous artists such as Sassu, Matta and Licata turn the little medieval hamlet of Dozza into an open-air gallery of contemporary art.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Groups, T.O., Individuals
WHEN: always, except on Monday (closing day of the Castle of Dozza and Enoteca Regionale)

After a gentle stroll along the village’s streets, we will get into the Sforza Castle. Dating back to 1250 and rebuilt during the Renaissance period by Caterina Sforza, later on it was the noble residence of the Malvezzi-Campeggi family until 1960: its nicely decorated rooms, the laundry and the kitchen still keep original furniture, paintings and tools. The underground vaults of the Castle are home to Enoteca Regionale dell’Emilia-Romagna, where about 800 different regional wines and several other products are on display and on sale.

In the afternoon we will visit a winery located in a scenic position on Imola’s hills. We’ll try a selection of different DOC wines (Sangiovese Superiore, Barbera, Trebbiano, Pignoletto and Chardonnay) paired with sliced meat products, cheese and “piadina romagnola” (local flatbread). The tour also includes a walk in Imola's old town center to discover its hidden treasures: the Old Pharmacy of the Hospital (a 18th cent. shop housing a collection of 457 majolica jars – closed on Sundays), the Cathedral of St. Cassiano (the third cathedral of the town!), and the palaces overlooking piazza Matteotti (the main square): the Renaissance-style Palazzo Sersanti and 18th cent. Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall).

Sforza Castle of Dozza: full ticket € 5.00, reduced ticket for groups  4.00.
The wine tasting costs are excluded.
